House Rules for New Leaders and Managers by Jacqueline House, MBA is a leadership how to for new leaders and managers, and a refresher for experienced leaders. This straight to the point, hard hitting primer addresses such issues as how messy leadership thinking leads to teams who cannot live up to their full potential, and how leaders must get their own 'houses in order' to facilitate change. House Rules for New Leaders and Managers is built on a fundamental truth messy leadership thinking creates messy and under productive teams. This book will cause leaders to think reflectively about how effective their learned actions and reactions are to reaching personal and team goals, regardless of the leadership styles to which they have been exposed. Whether a leader considers themselves to be a visionary, a coach, a facilitator, a combination of these three, or in another category all together, this primer will give insight into key areas of leading people along with 25 practical steps to implement and bring about positive change.
Today's busy leader or manager has little time to read and absorb thousands, or even hundreds, of pages of leadership and management theory, but if the thinking of leaders can be reformed and transformed, the productivity of team members will blossom. House Rules for New Leaders and Managers gets straight to the bottom line by distilling complex leadership theory into bite size strategies for effective leadership. It has been described as short, sweet, and to the point. Leaders and managers from all walks of life, including those who are in a corporate or community setting, non-profit organization, newly promoted, experienced and inexperienced, as well as entrepreneurs will be able to quickly grasp and implement 25 different actions to address the challenges of managing and leading a team.
Many leaders and managers are promoted into leadership positions, for which the only qualifications were successful performance as a team member. This ill equips them to be a good leader. Still other leaders spend so much time away from the work in the trenches, and the people who perform the work, that they have forgotten the impact of their words and actions on the productivity of the people that they are trying to persuade to be productive. Yet other leaders are assigned a title, and have assumed that without their overbearing presence, no work will be done. Combine these issues with the ever-growing need to do more with less time, and fewer staff and you have a recipe for ineffective leadership and teams who either fail to reach their goals, or reach their goals under great stress and duress.
House Rules for New Leaders and Managers is a leadership handbook of sorts. It’s meant to be read when needed for inspiration, and kept close at hand for frequent reminders of what it means to be an effective leader. And, it all starts with leaders and managers getting their own ‘houses in order’.

House Rules for New Leaders and Managers Five Truths Plus 25 Steps to Change eBook Jacqueline House Reviews
Awesome read! Great tool for Management and Leadership. The book has much to offer in Leadership and Humanity. Growth and Developmrnt for both the internal (employee) and external (customer).
I've been a leader for over twenty five years, so I thought, until I read the book. Being a servant and being liked were my weakest spots as a leader. This powerful quick read has me reexamining my leadership skills. Its a must read.....
This book, though small, is jammed packed with powerful information, insight and inspiration to every leader in any capacity. I am a Pastor of a church, and it has definitely inspired me to become a better leader and really be considerate of those who have chose to follow and even work along side me in ministry. Thanks, Ms. House for an excellent tool!
This book is a wonderful foundation for anyone endeavoring to become an effective leader, or manager. It should also be required reading for leaders and managers already in place, especially those who have been assigned those positions, but in actuality, are clueless. My only recommended improvement would be a print version, so it could be placed in every middle-manager's office, as the Bible is placed in every hotel room.
What I liked about this book is that the content mirrors universal truths about real life experiences in management and leadership. Regardless of age, race, gender, class, or any other -ism... one can find help in the pages.
I became a COO of a company at age twenty-four. If I had a book like this I would have known what to expect and what not to do while building relationships with coworkers. I could have avoided burnout.
For this reason, I would recommend this book as a must read for all leaders in all fields. I would give special recommendation for business students and Business Fraternities. House can easily make this book a part one in a series of House Rules books.
I have experienced Jacqueline's personality and leadership style firsthand, when we both volunteered in Toastmasters.
This work is a reflection of her style. It is well-written and a ready resource for managers, experienced and new.
Thank you Jacqueline for showing up daily as the best version of yourself and lighting the way for the rest of us that serve in leadership roles.
You'll be glad you added this concise reference to your library.
I was impressed with the message throughout the book . The first time manager or seasoned manager will get the importance of first getting in touch with the leadership role , the why, and the responsibility to their followers. Rule # 5 was my favorite because it speaks to nurturing the relationship and cultivating future leaders, even if they do not remain with the organization. Congratulations on producing a hands on approach resource.
This is really a quick, great and necessary read for any new and experienced leaders. I say necessary because all of Jacqueline's rules apply to persons who have been in leadership roles for years and years, and in the same breath, applies to persons who are brand new to the leadership world.
